Why a Pre-Ride Routine Matters

Most mechanical problems that strand cyclists or contribute to crashes are detectable before the ride begins. A structured inspection routine — done consistently and in the same order each time — builds the muscle memory needed to catch issues quickly, even on rushed mornings.

Consistency Is More Important Than Thoroughness

A fast but consistent five-minute check performed before every ride will catch more problems over a riding season than an occasional hour-long inspection. Build the habit of working through the same sequence every time so that anything out of the ordinary stands out immediately. The Full Pre-Ride Checklist

Work through each group in order. Flag any item you cannot resolve before riding — some issues, such as brake fade or a loose headset, make the bike unsafe to ride until corrected.

Tyres and Wheels

Check tyre pressure with a gauge and inflate to the range printed on the tyre sidewall. Must

Do Not Ride With Compromised Brakes

If either brake lever travels more than halfway to the handlebar before the brake engages, the bike should not be ridden until the cause is identified and corrected. Possible causes include worn pads, a stretched cable, air in hydraulic lines, or a bent rotor. These issues do not resolve on their own and worsen with continued use.

After the Ride: Closing the Loop

A quick post-ride scan takes two minutes and makes the next pre-ride check faster. Wipe down the chain, note any new sounds or handling changes, and add any worn consumables — brake pads, inner tubes, bar tape — to a running shopping list rather than waiting until failure.
