But they rarely capture what it actually feels like to cook a meal in a seaway, sleep soundly in a V-berth, or move through the cabin without banging your elbows. Livability is experiential, and no datasheet fully communicates it.

This checklist is designed to bridge that gap. Use it during a boat inspection — ideally one where you spend meaningful time below decks rather than just glancing at the layout. Headroom and Passage Width

Structural defects, osmotic blistering, keel-to-hull joint integrity, and through-hull fitting condition require qualified assessment that goes beyond what this checklist covers. Odors Can Signal Hidden Problems

A musty or diesel-tinged smell inside lockers and bilge spaces often indicates water intrusion, fuel leaks, or inadequate drainage — not just poor housekeeping. These conditions can be costly to remediate and may affect seaworthiness. Treat persistent odors as a serious flag requiring investigation rather than a cosmetic inconvenience.

Using the Results of Your Inspection

After working through every item on this checklist, you should have a clear, personal picture of how the vessel's interior will serve your actual use patterns — not just its theoretical capacity.
